Zygomatic implants are extra long upper jaw implants for where there is not enough bone for conventional or All-on-4 implant bridgework. They anchor into the the cheek bone (the zygoma), avoiding the need for complex grafting, and in combination with implants at the front are strong enough to support an entire arch of teeth. As in the All-on-4 technique, they are connected three days after the surgery. Most commonly, one zygomatic implant is used on each side of the upper jaw with 2-4 short implants in the front. In cases of extreme bone loss, two zygomatic implants are placed on each side and with perhaps just one or two short implants in front. This procedure is always done under general anaesthetic, usually as a day surgery procedure. International studies report survival rates of over 98%. Improvements in the design and surgical techniques means the shape of the replacement bridge is excellent and very little different from when conventional implants are used.
