Denture construction is broken into a number of stages:
full denture stages
- Primary impressions
- Secondary or detailed impressions (usually with a specially made custom impression tray)
- Occlusal rims, face bow and bite registration
- Tooth try in (usually two visits) when the position of the teeth will be set in wax, prior to final processing of the dentures.

partial denture stages
- Primary impressions
- Mouth preparation and secondary or detailed impressions (usually with a specially made custom impression tray)
- Casting try-in, altered cast impression, bite registration
- Tooth try in (sometimes two visits) when the position of the teeth will be set in wax, prior to final processing of the dentures.
